Old Strathcona named Provincial Historic District

(Staff) – A portion of Edmonton's Old Strathcona district, including a section of Whyte Avenue, has been recognized by the province for its contributions to Alberta's history.

Designated a Provincial Historic Area, Old Strathcona will now be listed on the Alberta and Canadian registers of historic places.

Strathcona was an incorporated town from 1899 until 1912, when it amalgamated with Edmonton. Picturesque structures from that period and earlier remain, including the Strathcona Hotel, Dominion Hotel Building, No. 1 Fire Hall and former Canadian Pacific Railway station.

The protected area includes 30 identified historic properties, of which 14 have been formally designated by the city or the province. The other 16 properties are eligible for designation.

The Old Strathcona neighbourhood is also known for its theatres, restaurants, nightlife, lively farmers' market and hosting special events including the annual Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival.

“The unique area already plays an important role in Edmonton's landscape,” said Hector Goudreau, minister of Alberta Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture. “This designation recognizes the cultural and historical significance the area brings, not only to the city but to the province as a whole. I hope this encourages Albertans and tourists alike to visit Old Strathcona and to learn about the stories behind the area that have contributed to our province's development.” Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel brought the designation request forward on behalf of the city. The province acted on the request, which also had significant public support and approval from City Council.

“Old Strathcona has been a vibrant centre of commerce, culture and entertainment since our community's earliest days, and today it continues to be a top destination for Edmontonians and visitors alike,” said Mandel. “It's fitting that we honour the neighbourhood's place in our history through this designation, and we're grateful that the Government of Alberta has recognized the important role Old Strathcona has played in forming the character of this province.”

Old Strathcona is Alberta's second Provincial Historic Area. The commercial core of Fort Macleod was the first, designated in 1984.
