(Special) – Four hundred years already! In 1608 the French adventure on North American soil began at the site of “Kébec,” an Algonquin word meaning “where the river narrows.” It was a recognized meeting place and, from the beginning, Québec City was a cultural crossroads.

Québec City, the capital of Québec since 1608 and a World Heritage Site recognized as the cradle of French civilization in North America, will be celebrating L’esprit des Fêtes throughout 2008. The program features major festivities aimed at commemorating the past, celebrating the present and looking to the future.

During 2008, a host of events will take place, from neighbourhood parties to grand-scale stage productions, and from international meetings to activities showcasing local traditions. The celebrations will begin with opening ceremonies the evening of December 31, 2007, ringing in the New Year. Over the summer, Espace 400e, located in the Old Port of Québec, will serve as the heart of the 2008 celebrations.

The festivities will culminate in a major urban event on July 3 to July 6, 2008, in commemoration of July 3, 1608, the date the city was founded by the great explorer Samuel de Champlain. Other international events will take place throughout the year, including the World Ice Hockey Championships, the Sommet de la Francophonie and the 49th International Eucharistic Congress.

Québec City is inviting all to join with local residents 2008 celebrations, which should leave a significant legacy for the enjoyment of future generations.
