Block Island provides opportunity to step back in time
By Steve and Caroline Lake
Rhode Island, the smallest of all 50 U.S. states, has 400 miles of gorgeous shoreline to explore. The first colony to declare independence from Britain and known as the Ocean State, Rhode Island has much to offer.
For a step back in time, nothing could be more perfect than a trip to Block Island, easily accessible by ferry from Point Judith, about a 45-minute drive from Providence or Newport.
Settled in 1614 after being discovered by Dutch explorer Adrian Block, the slower pace of the island affords the visitor a relaxing vacation. The smallest town in the smallest state, the year-round population is a little over 900.
Be sure to visit Abrams Animal Farm, where an exotic group of animals peacefully coexist. What a strange place to view camels, llamas and emus. Pet the animals that crowd to the fence. The donkeys, goats and sheep will vie for your attention.
Hiking is one of the most popular activities. On the 6,400-acre island there are 40 kilometres of well maintained walking trails. Some of the best hikes lead to sandy beaches.
Bikes and mopeds can be rented to explore the area. Several conservation groups should be congratulated for protecting habitats for birds and animals and the spectacular views of hills rolling to the sea.
Block Island Southeast Light, on the southeast side of the island is one of its two historic lighthouses. The other is Block Island North Light, on the northern tip.
Most of the shopping in Block Island is on Water Street; however, tucked away on some of the smaller side streets are inviting galleries, unique gift shops and book stores.
There are a number of charming inns on the island. A stay at the 1661 Inn is relaxing and restorative. Request an ocean view when making reservations.
The comfortably furnished rooms and individual terraces beg you to enjoy the scene of waves rolling in from the beautiful Atlantic Ocean, while the garden is filled with colourful flowers and half-tamed rabbits frequent the grounds looking for tidbits from guests.
The 1661 Inn’s champagne buffet is renowned. The many delicious selections are to be savoured and the incomparable views from the dining porch call for lingering. Wine and snacks are served in the late afternoon, early evening hours.
There are many fine restaurants on the island. For a fine dining experience, the Atlantic Inn’s prix fixe four-course dinner is wonderful. This is where President Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton dined in 1997.
Block Island affords a memorable experience.
